Orthopedic Massage

Orthopedic Massage // Improve and Prevent

Work or sport related repetitive strain injuries, soft-tissue injuries, and other musculoskeletal disorders that do not require surgery are often caused by or lead to muscle imbalances which impair function of the movement system, and is addressed within orthopedic massage.

Orthopedic Massage is the systematic approach of assessing the problem, and using the appropriate techniques to restore function. Simple take home self-massage & stretches are instructed; not only to maintain the benefits of the session, but to improve and prevent.

Assessment is key
Without assessment there is no way to identify which structures (muscle, tendon, ligament, etc.) are involved in the dysfunction (hypertonicity, trigger points, strains, etc.) causing the pain problems or restriction in movement.

One size does not fit all
It is believed that no single modality (massage, chiropractic, yoga, etc.) can treat all conditions, but a synergy of many. I bring the massage component, which again requires an integration of various massage therapy modalities that have been found to be most effective based on the latest research from James Waslaski, Erik Dalton, and Whitney Lowe to name a few.

South Bay Bodywork integrates the following massage therapy modalities:

  1. Deep Tissue Structural Bodywork (DTSB)
DTSB is a general term which encompasses many modalities such as Myofascial Release, Myoskeletal Alignment, or Structural Integration. DTSB slowly focuses on different layers of muscles & fascia working to relax, lengthen, and release strain patterns within them to create a structurally balanced body.
  2. Myoskeletal Alignment Techniques (MAT)
MAT balances the muscles/bones (myoskeletal) with a non-force technique combining Deep Tissue Structural Bodywork with joint mobilization from Muscle Energy Techniques, and Active Isolated Stretching. Like DTSB, the focus is on muscle imbalances and postural distortions, but with the intent of aligning bones.
  3. Active Isolated Stretching (AIS)
AIS is a form of dynamic stretching that works with the body, and not against using the principal of reciprocal inhibition. When a muscle group contracts, the opposing group is allowed to relax, and receive the stretch. This is only held for 2 seconds, and repeated for repetitions which pumps circulation, and retrains the neuromuscular system.
  4. Soft Tissue Release (STR)
STR incorporates Active Isolated Stretching in conjunction to the application of pressure on specific areas of tension along the muscle being stretched. Its goal is to reorganize scar tissue, and return the muscle(s) to their normal resting length.
